Job summary

iwoca is seeking a Senior Back-End Engineer to own the ledger platform across all products, delivering reliable reconciliation and reporting at scale. You will design, implement and operate systems in production, collaborating with product managers and finance teams.

Based in London or remotely within the UK, the role blends hands-on coding with architectural leadership and a strong focus on data integrity in high-stakes financial services.

Qualifications

• Extensive back-end engineering experience.
• Experience building and running microservices and distributed systems in production.
• Comfortable reasoning about cross-service communication, transactional correctness, and failure modes at scale.
• Relational databases experience, ideally PostgreSQL; open to MySQL or similar; emphasis on data integrity.
• Experience with ledgered/regulated domains (ledger, accounting, billing, payments) with immutable audit trails and reconciliation controls.
• Experience leading a feature or project end to end (scoping, design, delivery, production).
• Use of AI in daily workflow (e.g., Cursor, Claude Code) and validation of outputs.

Responsibilities

• Lead delivery of projects involving multiple stakeholders and systems.
• Develop deep domain expertise and act as a trusted technical advisor to the business.
• Perform scoping and prototyping to support feasibility testing.
• Architect and implement scalable solutions for ledger lifecycle, reconciliation, and reporting.
• Use domain modelling to craft simple, testable designs and evolve software accordingly.
• Translate product requirements into actionable technical plans for the team.
• Own production deployments and ensure reliability and operability.
• Review work and document it for production readiness.
