Job summary

GitLab is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to design, implement, and evolve backend capabilities for a global, AI-enabled DevSecOps platform. You will influence technical direction, collaborate with product, design, and security teams, and own key backend standards to improve reliability and performance.

In a remote-first, asynchronous environment, you will mentor engineers, drive architectural decisions, and integrate agentic AI into production workflows to deliver scalable, resilient systems

Qualifications

• Deep Backend Expertise: strong command of backend architecture, APIs, data systems, and performance tuning.
• Architectural judgment: experience designing modular boundaries, bounded contexts, and migration-safe architectures.
• Agentic AI expertise: proven experience building/operating agentic systems in production.
• Influence and clear written communication bridging product needs and technical reality.

Responsibilities

• Drive Technical Direction: design and ship backend features with minimal guidance.
• Raise the Bar: define backend standards for quality, security, availability and performance.
• Mentor & Lead: mentor engineers and improve delivery through code and design reviews.
• Operational Excellence: diagnose and prevent performance/reliability issues at scale.
