Wise Platform is seeking an API Experience Engineer to join the API Experience Team in a hybrid London-based role. You will design, build, and lead scalable public APIs with Java, Spring Boot, Kafka, and PostgreSQL, shaping developer experience for global partners.

The role emphasizes API standards (REST, OpenAPI/Swagger, OAuth2), mentorship, cross-functional collaboration, and a strong product mindset, with travel to engineering hubs as needed and a generous equity package.

Qualifications

• Public API Experience: Proven track record of designing, building, and maintaining production-grade public APIs (RESTful APIs, OpenAPI/Swagger, OAuth2).
• Core Backend Stack: Extensive experience with Java and Spring Boot for building resilient backend microservices.
• Distributed Systems & Data: Hands-on experience with event-driven architecture (Kafka or similar messaging systems) and relational database design/optimization (PostgreSQL, MySQL).
• Architectural Knowledge: Proficiency in domain-driven design (DDD), microservices patterns, and building for high availability and low latency.
• Product Mindset: A customer-centric approach to engineering—balancing technical excellence with business context, user experience, and cost efficiency.
• Communication & Collaboration: Ability to convey complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders, collaborate across business units, and adapt to feedback.

Responsibilities

• Design & Architecture: Architect, build, and maintain scalable backend services with Java, Spring Boot, Kafka, and PostgreSQL.
• API Product Ownership: Set API standards (REST, OpenAPI/Swagger, OAuth2) and create tools for partners.
• Technical Leadership: Lead code reviews, mentor juniors, and promote best practices.
• Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work with PMs, Solutions Engineers, and partner teams to shape features.
• Cross-Organizational Impact: Align Wise teams with API standards across frontend and infra.
• Global Travel: Collaborate with global hubs, including Tallinn.
