Job summary

Wise is seeking a senior backend/lead engineer to mentor a team of backend and web engineers. You will collaborate with Product to shape the next features and help evolve the platform that enables international payments for millions of customers worldwide.

Based in London, the role offers a competitive salary (£105k–£135k), RSUs, and Wise benefits. You should have experience with Java, Spring Boot, Kafka, and a track record of delivering scalable systems.

Qualifications

• Experience leading teams and expanding products through growth.
• Strong product mindset and passion for user experience with data-driven prioritisation.
• Effective communication to explain complex technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
• Ability to coordinate work across multiple teams and collaborate across the organisation.
• Ability to breaking complex projects into incremental milestones delivering customer value.
• Experience developing web applications and distributed systems in production.
• Familiarity with design and architectural patterns; focus on clean, performant, well-tested code.
• Curiosity and commitment to continuous learning and improvement.
• Experience following and advocating coding best practices, continuous delivery, and code reviews.
• Experience with relational and non-relational databases; query optimisation and schema design is a plus.
• Knowledge of Java and Spring Boot; experience with messaging systems such as Kafka is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Lead, mentor, and develop a team of backend and web engineers.
• Work closely with Product to shape future features.
• Help evolve the Wise platform that powers international payments for millions of customers.
• Build the receive-to-alias experience and platform.
• Develop the roadmap for the next two quarters with the Product Manager.
• Coordinate delivery across teams and help engineers prioritise solutions.
• Participate in the on-call rotation for critical services and help improve it.
