About the role
Senior Asset Engineer (Support) [Track]

The Senior Asset Engineer will provide senior technical leadership, assurance and strategic asset management expertise for the Track discipline, supporting the Head of Asset (Track) in delivering a safe, reliable, resilient and sustainable railway.

The role will lead and influence the development and implementation of Route asset management strategies, ensuring that asset condition, risk, performance and whole-life cost are effectively understood and translated into prioritised maintenance and investment plans. Working closely with Track Maintenance Engineers, Infrastructure Maintenance Engineers, Asset Strategy, Delivery Units, Projects and Regional Engineering, the postholder will provide technical direction, constructive challenge and assurance to support consistent, evidence-based engineering decisions.

A key purpose of the role is to strengthen engineering capability across the Route by coaching and developing engineers, promoting appropriate delegation and empowering teams to make timely decisions within their competence and authority. The Senior Asset Engineer will lead and support technical reviews, Engineering and Local Verifications, audits, investigations and the management of technical variations, ensuring learning is captured and translated into improved standards, processes and ways of working.

The role will also champion continuous improvement and innovation, supporting the evaluation and adoption of new technologies where they can demonstrate measurable improvements in safety, asset performance, efficiency or whole-life cost. This will include ensuring that benefits are clearly defined, evidenced and embedded into business-as-usual activities.

Working across functional and organisational boundaries, the Senior Asset Engineer will help integrate OpEx and CapEx planning through the Route Asset Management Plan, identify and expedite emerging asset risks, and ensure that short-term engineering decisions remain aligned with longer-term Route and Regional strategies.

Ultimately, the role will provide visible and credible technical leadership, helping the Head of Asset (Track) build engineering capability, strengthen assurance and deliver a more proactive, data-led and risk-based approach to Track asset management across the Route.

Join us and be part of an organisation committed to delivering a safer, more reliable and more sustainable railway for the future.
