Job summary

Network Rail is seeking an Assistant Asset Engineer to support the management and performance of rail structures assets across the West Coast Route. You will coordinate inspections, analyse performance trends and help develop maintenance, renewal and enhancement plans to keep Britain’s rail network safe and efficient.

The role provides exposure to asset management across the lifecycle, working with internal and external stakeholders to ensure data accuracy and standards are met.

Qualifications

  • HNC/HND or equivalent qualification in relevant engineering discipline.
  • Significant experience in relevant engineering discipline.
  • Incorporated Engineer (desirable).
  • Knowledge of relevant engineering policies and standards.
  • Understanding of safety management systems and risk assessment techniques.

Responsibilities

  • Support asset management processes in line with company policies, standards and performance objectives.
  • Coordinate asset inspections, examinations and condition assessments, ensuring findings are evaluated and appropriate actions are implemented.
  • Prioritise and manage defect resolution activities, supporting the development and delivery of maintenance, renewal and risk mitigation plans.
  • Undertake engineering analysis, risk assessments and whole-life cost evaluations to support asset management decisions and business cases.
  • Monitor asset performance, condition trends and failure indicators to inform maintenance and investment strategies.
  • Support the development of enhancement schemes and work collaboratively with wider network capability programmes.
  • Identify and implement mitigation measures to reduce risks to asset performance, including impacts from adverse weather.
  • Maintain accurate asset information and records within company systems.
  • Provide engineering support for incident investigations and the identification of lessons learned.
  • Review proposals and projects that may affect route assets, identifying potential risks, conflicts and opportunities.
  • Support the technical assurance of projects, ensuring renewal requirements are correctly interpreted and engineering designs meet required standards.

West Coast South: Keeping Britain Moving

Stretching from Crewe to London Euston, West Coast South is part of Europe's busiest mixed-use railway-moving millions of passengers and 10% of the UK's freight each year. With over 1,000 miles of track and 64 stations, it's a vital link between major cities and local communities.

As part of the North West & Central region, we serve 1.3 million passengers daily and move 700,000 tonnes of freight weekly-covering a quarter of the national network.

About the role
Every day will be different, but you can expect to be involved in the following activities:

As an Assistant Asset Engineer, you will play a key role in supporting the effective management and performance of railways structures assets across the West Coast Route. Working within a collaborative engineering team, you will help deliver safe, reliable and efficient infrastructure by coordinating inspections, monitoring asset condition, analysing performance trends, and supporting the development of maintenance, renewal and enhancement plans. This is an excellent opportunity to develop your engineering expertise while contributing to the management of one of the UK's most important rail networks.

The successful candidate will support asset management activities throughout the asset lifecycle, from condition assessment and risk analysis to project development and incident investigation. You will work closely with internal and external stakeholders to ensure asset data is maintained accurately, engineering standards are met, and improvement opportunities are identified. The role offers exposure to a wide range of engineering disciplines, providing valuable experience in asset management, project delivery and railway infrastructure performance.

Key Responsibilities

Additional Role Requirements:

This role will be based out of Birmingham Baskerville House.

Hybrid working: For positions that permit hybrid arrangements, employees are expected to work from a Network Rail location for 60% of their weekly hours, typically 3 days for full time roles, pro-rata for part-time.
