Job summary

Network Rail is seeking a Geotechnical R&E Engineer for the Anglia route to advance renewal schemes on earthwork assets (Embankments, Soil Cuttings, Rock Cuttings). You will influence CAPEX planning, draft specifications, and work with delivery teams to meet safety, scope and budget targets.

You will contribute to asset data quality, participate in investigations, and support national program verification, while promoting safety and effective stakeholder engagement.

Qualifications

  • HNC/HND or equivalent qualification in a relevant subject.
  • Significant Geotechnical experience, particularly renewals/enhancements.
  • Knowledge of policy and standards in Geotechnical engineering.
  • Holds UK driving licence or able to obtain one.
  • Willingness to pursue professional membership.

About the role

The R&E (Renewals and Enhancements) team sits under the DEAM organisation in Eastern Region. The R&E team is responsible for major schemes and renewal projects on assets within the B&C portfolio, As a Geotechnical R&E engineer, your role would primarily be focused on progressing renewal schemes for the three earthwork assets - Embankments, Soil Cuttings and Rock Cuttings. The R&E team support the asset maintainers and delivery units in prioritising renewals, briefing financial and department leads, and providing technical expertise to ensure schemes are delivered safely, smoothly and within budget. This role is for Anglia route only.

In the Asset Engineer (R&E) role, you will determine renewal requirements to support the ongoing management of Geotechnical assets through proactive engineering renewal and enhancement project delivery. Plan and Sponsor the CAPEX workbank in line with asset policy, operational requirements and stakeholder needs. Produce specifications and acceptance criteria for Geotechnical engineering works to achieve the required scope and quality in accordance with company engineering policies. Support prioritisation of the portfolio based on asset risks and needs, balanced against available funding.

Key Accountabilities:
  1. Inspect and prioritise renewal proposals for inclusion in the Geotechnical engineering workbank. Provide support to the production and prioritisation of the national business plan.
  2. Develop allocated renewal and enhancement schemes to meet Network Rail's goals prior to handover to delivery. Following handover, support the development and implementation of projects to confirm the renewal requirements are sufficient, correctly interpreted and any changes agreed. Check that completed schemes are appropriately assessed to determine they meet the project remit.
  3. Specify acceptance criteria for Geotechnical engineering works including design approval, acceptance of equipment and hand back to maintenance as appropriate. Audit acceptance processes are being discharged appropriately.
  4. Work with members of the other asset management teams to review renewal and enhancement proposals to optimise engineering activity across the railway infrastructure system and identify critical technical problems.
  5. Identify issues of national significance and elevate to the national team.
  6. Check that accurate and comprehensive records relating to the existence, configuration and modification history of Geotechnical engineering assets are maintained and that they accurately reflect their current 'as built' status.
  7. Participate in investigations of incidents relating to renewals where required.
  8. Carry out Engineering verification activities in support of the national programme.
  9. Carry out asset condition inspections that will inform the Geotechnical asset condition database and the renewals work bank.
Essential Criteria:
  • HNC/HND or equivalent qualification in a relevant subject
  • Working towards membership of a relevant professional institution
  • Significant Geotechnical engineering experience, particularly related to renewals and enhancements
  • Holds relevant professional licences and technical qualifications, or capable of achieving within reasonable timescales
  • Knowledge of policy and standards relating to Geotechnical engineering
  • Holds valid UK driving licence, or eligible and willing to obtain
Desirable Criteria:
  • Degree in a relevant subject
  • Incorporated or Chartered Engineer
  • An understanding of safety management systems and risk assessment techniques
  • Knowledge of investment processes and procedures, including relevant computer systems
  • Knowledge of project management techniques
  • Proficient in data management
  • Extensive experience working with stakeholders and delivery partners

Salary: £43,588 to £53,167 per annum (plus an Inner London allowance of £3,270 per annum).
