Job summary

Network Rail in the UK is seeking an Assistant Track Maintenance Engineer to provide technical leadership and support to maintenance teams, delivering operational excellence across the railway. You will monitor asset performance, ensure compliance with engineering standards, and drive continuous improvement within your area.

This full‑time onsite role at Three Bridges requires a 60‑minute commute and entails shift work, including days and nights, with no option to work from home.

Qualifications

  • Relevant technical engineering competence.
  • Knowledge of track maintenance delivery processes and techniques.
  • Understanding of safety, compliance, and assurance processes.
  • Experience working within an operational railway environment.
  • Knowledge of railway engineering standards and procedures.
  • Experience in design activities and engineering problem‑solving.
  • Understanding of failure investigation and asset rectification techniques.
  • Ability to build strong working relationships and influence stakeholders.
  • Excellent communication, organisational, and planning skills.
  • Knowledge of wider railway disciplines and their interaction with track maintenance.
  • Knowledge or experience of coaching and mentoring techniques.

  • Develop, coach, and engage team members to maximise performance and capability.
  • Promote a strong safety culture and manage staff competence and wellbeing.
  • Monitor track asset performance, reliability, and productivity.
  • Provide technical guidance, engineering expertise, and problem‑solving support.
  • Undertake surveys, inspections, and design‑related activities.
  • Investigate asset failures and incidents, identifying effective solutions.
  • Manage assurance activities and ensure compliance with engineering standards and procedures.
  • Coordinate track monitoring activities and analyse resulting data.
  • Maintain accurate engineering records, databases, and reporting systems.
  • Review and approve work plans, designs, and method statements where required.
  • Carry out quality checks, surveillance activities, and asset condition assessments.

About the role

As an Assistant Track Maintenance Engineer, you will provide technical leadership and support to maintenance teams, helping to deliver operational excellence across the railway. Performance Related Pay Scheme

This is afull-time permanent position.

Candidates mustlive within a 60-minute commute to Three Bridges Rail Operating Centre, as this is afully onsite role with no option to work from home, and it operates on ashift-based schedule requiring both day and night working.
