Job summary

Financial Conduct Authority in London is seeking a Lead AI Engineer to own and evolve the FCA AI Platform within the Data, Technology and Innovation division. You will drive end-to-end architecture, security, and reusable platform capabilities across retrieval, memory, and agent orchestration to power production AI products.

This hands-on technical leadership role requires deep AWS experience, a track record of shipping scalable AI services, and strong governance in a regulated environment.

Qualifications

• Extensive hands-on backend engineering experience building production services such as APIs and microservices, with strong software engineering fundamentals.
• Hands-on experience building AI applications and/or AI platform components (memory, RAG pipelines, agent harnesses, model gateways) and ability to explain design trade-offs.
• Experience delivering cloud solutions on AWS, including deploying and operating services with modern DevOps practices (CI/CD, containerisation, monitoring).
• Experience embedding AI workflows into production applications and knowledge of AWS AI stack (Bedrock, Lambda, OpenSearch, etc.).
• Experience leading engineers technically in a regulated environment (auditability, explainability, data residency).

Responsibilities

• Lead the AI Platform build and own the platform architecture.
• Design and run the FCA's AI Platform on AWS as secure, reusable, self-service capabilities with clear APIs, SDKs and documentation.
• Set the architecture, roadmap and reference architectures, translate constraints into technical standards, and manage build-vs-buy decisions.
• Deliver a model gateway and access layer with governance, routing, caching, and access control.
• Establish retrieval as a platform service (RAG), and engineer AI memory services with proper retention policies.
• Develop the agent runtime (the harness) including orchestration, tool calling, MCP integrations and audit trails.
• Embed guardrails and safety controls as default, including data redaction and policy enforcement.
• Define AI DLC standards and tooling for data/quality evaluation, regression testing, and red‑teaming.
• Establish CI/CD with evaluation gates, versioning, and controlled releases aligned with governance.
• Drive observability with dashboards, tracing, and runbooks; support scalable operations.
• Collaborate with AI Product teams to convert recurring needs into platform capabilities and reusable patterns.
