Job summary

Specialist SEND Group is seeking a compassionate SEND Teaching Assistant for a specialist SEND school in Wigan to support children and young people with a range of additional needs. You will help learners engage with lessons, use visual supports, and promote communication and independence in a caring, supportive environment.

You will work 1:1 and in small groups, collaborating with teachers, therapists and the wider SEND team.

Qualifications

Has previous experience supporting children or young people with SEND.
Calm, patient, nurturing and resilient.
Understanding that behaviour can be a form of communication.
Can build positive, trusting relationships with learners.
Confident adapting approach to meet individual needs.
Strong communication and teamwork skills.
Committed to safeguarding and welfare of children and young people.

Responsibilities

Support learners on a 1:1 basis and within small groups/classroom settings.
Work with pupils with a range of needs incl. ASD, ADHD, learning disabilities, SEMH and complex needs.
Support learners to engage with lessons, activities and interventions.
Adapt resources and communication to meet individual learning needs.
Use visual supports, now-and-next boards, picture cards and sensory resources.
Support pupils with emotional regulation and behaviours that may challenge.
Encourage confidence, communication, independence and positive social interaction.
Work closely with teachers, therapists and the wider SEND team.
Follow individual support plans, EHCP outcomes and safeguarding procedures.
Provide personal care where required.
