Job description

SEND Teacher - Pre-Formal Autism & Complex Needs (Bolton)

Salary: Competitive daily rate (dependent on experience)

Contract: Full-time | Temporary with the potential to become permanent for the right candidate

Start Date: After October half term

SEND Inclusion Support is recruiting on behalf of one of our valued partner SEND schools for an experienced and compassionate SEND Teacher to join a specialist primary class supporting children with autism and complex learning needs.

This role offers the opportunity to teach a small class where relationships, communication and individual progress are at the heart of every day. The position will initially provide teaching cover while the school recruits permanently, but there is genuine potential for the role to become permanent for the right candidate.

You’ll be leading a well-supported class of eight pupils aged 6-9 years, where every child receives individualised support.

The class includes pupils who:
  • Are non-verbal and communicate using PECS, signs and gestures
  • Have diagnoses including Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), Learning Disabilities (LD) and PICA
  • Are working between Early Steps 1-4
  • Follow a sensory-based, experiential pre-formal curriculum
  • May have medical needs
  • May display behaviours that challenge
  • Benefit from dedicated 1:1 support
Responsibilities include:
  • Planning and delivering pre-formal learning experiences that promote engagement and communication.
  • Creating sensory-rich learning opportunities that reflect each pupil's individual needs.
  • Using PECS, signing and visual communication approaches to support learning.
  • Working collaboratively with teaching assistants to ensure consistent, high-quality support.
  • Supporting pupils' communication, independence and emotional regulation.
  • Following individual care plans, risk assessments and safeguarding procedures.
  • Monitoring progress and adapting teaching to celebrate every step forward.

We’re looking for someone who understands that specialist teaching is about much more than delivering lessons.

You’ll ideally have:
  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
  • Experience teaching pupils with Autism Spectrum Condition and complex SEND.
  • Knowledge of pre-formal or sensory-based learning approaches.
  • Experience supporting non-verbal pupils and alternative communication methods such as PECS.
  • A calm, patient and consistent approach to behaviour support.
  • Excellent teamwork and communication skills.
  • Experience supporting pupils with PICA, medical needs or complex behaviours would be highly beneficial.
Other details
  • Full-time opportunity starting after October half term.
  • Potential temp-to-perm opportunity for the right candidate.
  • Small class with excellent staffing support.
  • A rewarding role where you'll make a genuine difference every day.
  • Ongoing support from SEND Inclusion Support throughout your placement.

SEND Inclusion Support is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. All appointments are subject to satisfactory pre-employment and safeguarding checks, including an enhanced DBS check, right to work verification, references and any other checks relevant to the role and setting.
