Job summary

SMART Education Recruitment is seeking a Teacher of SEN in Handsworth to join a supportive team working with primary pupils with Autism and communication needs.

You will deliver tailored lessons in small classes, building confidence, social skills and independence while collaborating with assistants and therapists. Roles start September 2026 on a long-term contract with potential for permanence.

Qualifications

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) is essential.
  • Minimum of 6 months' experience teaching in a UK SEN setting.
  • Proven experience supporting pupils with Autism and communication needs.
  • Enhanced DBS (or willingness to obtain).
  • Ability to provide references covering the previous 24 months.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver engaging, differentiated lessons matching the individual needs of pupils.
  • Support pupils with Autism, communication needs, and other additional learning requirements.
  • Monitor pupil progress and adapt learning to reflect each student's targets.
  • Work closely with Teaching Assistants and therapists across the school and promote positive behaviour.

The Role

As a Teacher of SEN, you will join a highly supportive SEN team, teaching and inspiring a small class of pupils with Autism, communication challenges, and moderate learning difficulties. You will be responsible for delivering tailored, engaging lessons that nurture confidence, social skills, and independence among your students.

This role will suit someone who thrives on adapting learning, enjoys building positive relationships, and is committed to inclusive teaching in a specialist setting.

Role Responsibilities
  • Plan and deliver engaging, differentiated lessons matching the individual needs of pupils
  • Support pupils with Autism, communication needs, and other additional learning requirements
  • Monitor pupil progress and adapt learning to reflect each student's EHCP targets
  • Work closely with experienced Teaching Assistants and therapists across the schoolPromote positive behaviour, emotional wellbeing, and a sense of achievement in every child
Skills and Experience
  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) is essential
  • Minimum of 6 months' experience teaching in a UK SEN setting
  • Proven experience supporting pupils with Autism and communication needs
  • Enhanced Child or Child & Adult DBS (or willingness to obtain)
  • Ability to provide references covering the previous 24 months
Location and Package
  • Based in Handsworth, easily accessible by public transport and car
  • Competitive daily pay: £140 £253 per day
  • Contract role starting from September 2026
