Job summary

Thameside Primary School in Grays is seeking a SEND Learning Support Assistant to support pupils with Special Educational Needs during term-time. The role is 30 hours 50 minutes per week, 8.40am–3.20pm, Monday to Friday, with a 30-minute lunch. It is fixed-term until 31 August 2027, with start on 5 October 2026.

The successful candidate will assist with planning learning activities, supervise pupils, and support their social and emotional development within a nurturing environment.

Qualifications

  • GCSE English and Maths at grade 4 or above
  • Experience with children with Special Educational Needs
  • Ability to work within a team and communicate effectively
  • Willingness to provide personal care as needed

SEND Learning Support Assistant

Salary: Thurrock Band A Point 1-6

(£17,090 - £18,291 actual salary per annum)

30 hours and 50 minutes per week

8.40am - 3.20pm (Monday-Friday) With a 30 minute unpaid lunch break

37 weeks of the year - term time only

Start Date: 5th October 2026

Fixed term until 31st August 2027

An opportunity has arisen for a SEND Learning Support Assistant with experience of working with children with Special Educational Needs to work in our successful team supporting students across the school. This role is an exciting opportunity for the right candidate to take on a crucial role to enable pupils access to learning, by supervising and assisting pupils and understanding how a child’s special educational needs impact on their social and emotional development.

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate:
  • The ability to communicate with other members of staff effectively
  • The ability to build strong professional relationships
  • Their understanding of the Nurture approach, and the theory underlying a Nurture provision
  • Assist with the planning of learning activities by identifying and preparing resources required to support lesson plans and learning outcomes.
  • Good organisational skills
  • Good behaviour management skills
  • A proficiency in ICT
  • Applicants must hold GCSE Grade 4 or above in both English and Maths
  • Good record keeping skills (Progress and medical where required)
  • A willingness to provide personal care
  • A passion for the impact teaching and learning can have on improving life
  • A commitment to supporting the delivery of education at the highest standard
Main duties will be:
  • Supporting pupils, to ensure they are engaged in learning activities and improve outcomes for children
  • To promote the inclusion and acceptance of all students within the classroom
  • To act as a role model, setting high expectations of conduct and promoting positive pupil behaviour, to create a safe and inclusive learning environment
  • To provide feedback to the relevant staff on the pupil’s progress, enabling lesson access and keeping pupil-related records
  • To deal with any immediate problems or emergencies according to the school’s policies and procedures about health & safety, welfare and wellbeing and safeguarding
  • To establish positive relationships with the pupils
