Job summary

Quantum Scholars in Wells, Somerset, seeks a patient SEND English Tutor to provide personalised one-to-one tuition to a secondary learner in Wells. This in-person role focuses on supporting a pupil with SEND and SEMH needs, helping them build confidence in reading, writing and English.

The successful candidate will adapt teaching styles to meet individual needs, support GCSE revision when appropriate, and work closely with parents and other professionals to monitor progress while maintaining

Responsibilities

SEND English Tutor - Wells Suitable to NQT New

Location: Wells, Somerset

Quantum Scholars are looking for a patient, supportive and experienced SEND English Tutor to provide personalised one-to-one tuition to a young person in Wells.

The successful tutor will have strong English subject knowledge and experience supporting secondary-aged learners with SEND. You will be confident adapting your teaching style, pace, resources and explanations to meet individual needs, while helping the learner build confidence and make positive progress in English.

Experience supporting young people with SEMH needs, anxiety, school avoidance, disengagement or challenging behaviour would be highly desirable. The ability to create a calm, structured and supportive learning environment will be essential.

This is an in-person tutoring role and is not online work.

The role may involve:
  • Providing personalised one-to-one English tuition to a secondary-aged learner.
  • Supporting a young person with SEND and/or SEMH needs.
  • Supporting the secondary English curriculum, including GCSE where appropriate.
  • Supporting reading, writing, comprehension, spelling, grammar and vocabulary.
  • Identifying gaps in knowledge and providing targeted support.
  • Adapting lessons, resources and teaching approaches to meet individual needs.
  • Breaking learning into manageable and accessible steps.
  • Supporting GCSE revision, exam preparation and exam technique where appropriate.
  • Developing confidence in reading, writing and verbal communication.
  • Supporting a learner who may experience anxiety, school avoidance or disengagement.
  • Creating a calm, structured and positive learning environment.
  • Using the learner's interests and strengths to encourage engagement.
  • Supporting learners who may display challenging behaviour where appropriate.
  • Developing independence, resilience and positive attitudes towards learning.
  • Monitoring progress and providing appropriate feedback.
  • Building a positive and trusting relationship with the learner.
  • Working collaboratively with parents/carers and other professionals involved in the learner's support.
  • Maintaining professional boundaries and confidentiality.
  • Following safeguarding procedures and promoting the welfare of the young person.
Essential requirements:
  • Strong English subject knowledge at secondary level.
  • Experience teaching or tutoring English.
  • Experience working with secondary-aged children or young people with SEND.
  • Experience providing one-to-one support is desirable.
  • Ability to adapt teaching approaches to meet individual SEND needs.
  • Experience supporting learners who may have barriers to mainstream education.
  • SEMH experience would be highly desirable.
  • Experience supporting challenging behaviour would be beneficial.
  • A patient, calm, flexible and empathetic approach.
  • Ability to build trusting and respectful relationships with young people.
  • Experience supporting learners who may be reluctant, anxious or disengaged from education.
  • Strong communication and organisational skills.
  • Ability to maintain clear professional boundaries.
  • Reliable and consistent approach to work.
  • Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
  • Enhanced DBS check and satisfactory references.
  • The right to work in the UK.
