Job summary

Supply Heroes are recruiting an experienced SEN Teaching Assistant for a Sutton Coldfield primary school to provide dedicated 1:1 support to a Reception pupil with autism. The role runs full-time, Monday to Friday, with afternoons spent assisting a Year 1 class.

The successful candidate will work closely with teachers, SENCO, and the wider school team, using EHCP targets and visual supports to help the pupil access learning and daily routines. Immediate start available.

Qualifications

  • Previous experience supporting Early Years or Reception pupils with Autism.
  • Strong knowledge of autism-friendly practice and sensory needs.
  • Experience using visual timetables and communication symbols.
  • Understanding of co-regulation strategies and recognising subtle signs of distress.

Responsibilities

  • Provide dedicated 1:1 support for a Reception pupil with autism.
  • Help the pupil access learning and daily routines in a safe, nurturing environment.
  • Implement strategies and targets outlined within the pupil's EHCP.
  • Use visual supports including symbols, visual timetables and Now & Next boards.
  • Support communication, emotional regulation and social interaction.
  • Assist with transitions, routines and play opportunities.
  • Encourage independence with daily living skills, including eating and toileting where required.
  • Work closely with the class teacher, SENCO and wider school team.
  • Provide classroom support in a Year 1 class during afternoon sessions.

Contract: Ongoing, with potential to continue long term

Salary: Competitive, dependent on experience

Experienced SEN Teaching Assistant Required

Supply Heroes are recruiting on behalf of a friendly and inclusive Primary School in Sutton Coldfield for an experienced SEN Teaching Assistant to provide dedicated 1:1 support to a Reception-aged pupil with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC).

This is a rewarding opportunity to make a genuine difference to a child's educational journey. The successful candidate will support the pupil on a 1:1 basis until approximately 1:00pm each day before supporting within a Year 1 classroom during the afternoons.

The role is available immediately and is full-time, Monday to Friday.

The Role
  • Provide dedicated 1:1 support for a Reception pupil with autism.
  • Help the pupil access learning and daily routines in a safe, nurturing environment.
  • Implement strategies and targets outlined within the pupil's EHCP.
  • Use visual supports including symbols, visual timetables and Now & Next boards.
  • Support communication, emotional regulation and social interaction.
  • Assist with transitions, routines and play opportunities.

Essential Experience & Skills
  • Previous experience supporting Early Years or Reception pupils with Autism.
  • Strong knowledge of autism-friendly practice and sensory needs.
  • Experience using task boxes, work trays, visual timetables and communication symbols.
  • Understanding of co-regulation strategies and recognising subtle signs of distress.
  • Ability to adapt activities and routines using their own initiative.
  • Confidence supporting non-verbal communication and social interaction.
  • Experience helping pupils develop independence and self-help skills.
  • Understanding of personal space, positive behaviour support and safe intervention practices.
  • Experience supporting pupils against EHCP outcomes and personalised targets.
  • A calm, patient, nurturing and proactive approach.

Requirements
  • Experience working with children with SEN, particularly Autism, within a UK school setting.
  • Enhanced DBS on the Update Service or willingness to obtain one.
  • Right to work in the UK.
  • Two professional references covering the last two years.
