Job description

We are recruiting for an SEN Teaching Assistant to work in a Primary School based in Stourport-on-Severn. This SEN Teaching Assistant role will involve working within the school's Year 2 class, providing dedicated 1:1 support to a child with moderate learning difficulties. The successful candidate will play an important role in supporting the child's learning and development, helping them access the curriculum and creating a positive, inclusive, and supportive learning environment. The role will involve providing tailored 1:1 support, particularly with reading and writing, helping the child develop their literacy skills, build confidence, and become more independent with their learning. The child will require additional encouragement, patience, and support to access classroom activities and complete learning tasks. This role is 4 days per week, starting in January on a long-term basis. The successful candidate will have previous experience working within a primary school or supporting children with Special Educational Needs (SEN). Experience supporting children with moderate learning difficulties and providing 1:1 literacy support would be highly advantageous. The school is looking for someone who can work collaboratively with the class teacher and other members of staff to help the child make progress and reach their full potential.

  • Providing additional explanations, encouragement, and reassurance to support the child's understanding.
  • Adapting learning resources and activities to meet the child's individual learning needs and abilities.
  • Encouraging the child to develop their confidence, independence, and motivation towards learning.
  • Supporting the child with phonics, reading comprehension, spelling, handwriting, and written tasks where required.
  • Working closely with the class teacher to implement appropriate strategies and support the child's individual learning targets.
  • Providing support during whole-class teaching, small-group activities, and independent learning tasks.
  • Building a positive and trusting relationship with the child to help them feel confident, safe, and supported.
  • Encouraging positive behaviour, engagement, and participation within the classroom.
  • Monitoring the child's progress and providing regular feedback to the class teacher.
  • Working collaboratively with the class teacher, SENCO, and other members of staff to ensure consistent support.
  • Maintaining a strong focus on safeguarding, health and safety, and pupil wellbeing throughout the school day.
To be successful in this SEN Teaching Assistant role, you will need:
  • Previous experience working within a primary school setting.
  • Experience supporting children with Special Educational Needs (SEN), particularly moderate learning difficulties.

  • The ability to support children's reading and writing development.
  • A good understanding of the primary school curriculum, particularly Key Stage 1.
  • A patient, nurturing, and encouraging approach to supporting children with additional needs.
  • The ability to adapt learning activities and resources to meet individual needs.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • The ability to build positive relationships with children, staff, and parents or carers.
  • The confidence to provide targeted support while encouraging the child's independence.
