Job summary

Randstad Education in Plymouth seeks a dedicated SEN Teaching Assistant to support pupils in Key Stage 3 and 4 with SEMH needs. You will provide 1:1 and small group support, applying trauma-informed approaches to foster a calm learning environment and help students meet EHCP goals.

The role requires an Enhanced DBS (Update Service) and experience with SEMH or complex needs. Full-time, term-time hours with a supportive SENCO team are on offer.

Qualifications

  • Enhanced DBS registered on the Update Service.
  • Experience working with SEMH, challenging behaviour, or complex needs.
  • Clear communication, patience and boundary-setting skills.
  • Level 2/3 Teaching Assistant qualification or relevant training (e.g., Team Teach, MAPA).
  • Based in or easily accessible to Plymouth for full-time, long-term commitment.

Responsibilities

  • Providing tailored 1:1 and small group support to students with SEMH needs.
  • Utilising de-escalation strategies and trauma-informed approaches to create a safe, structured learning environment.
  • Acting as a positive role model, building trusting relationships that empower students to navigate emotional challenges.
  • Collaborating with classroom teachers to adapt lessons to meet individual EHCP goals.
  • Monitoring progress and wellbeing, sharing insights with the SENCO to ensure support is effective.

What you will be doing

In this role, you will play a pivotal part in the educational and personal journey of pupils in Key Stage 3 and 4 who face barriers to learning. You will help transform lives by:

  • Providing tailored 1:1 and small group support to students with SEMH needs.
  • Utilising de-escalation strategies and trauma-informed approaches to create a safe, structured, and calm learning environment.

Who you are

You are a calm, professional, and emotionally literate individual who thrives in a school setting. You possess a strong desire to see every student reach their full potential, regardless of the challenges they face.

  • You hold an Enhanced DBS registered on the Update Service.
  • You have proven experience working with young people with SEMH, challenging behaviour, or complex needs.
  • You communicate with clarity, patience, and effective boundary-setting skills.
  • You have a Level 2/3 Teaching Assistant qualification or relevant degree/training (e.g., Team Teach, MAPA) is highly desirable.
  • You are based in or easily accessible to Plymouth and available for a full-time, long-term commitment.
