Job summary

Randstad Education in Plymouth is seeking a compassionate SEN Teaching Assistant to support pupils with SEMH in Key Stage 3 and 4. You will provide tailored 1:1 and small group support, using de-escalation strategies to create a safe and structured learning environment.

You will work closely with teachers and SENCO to adapt lessons to EHCP goals, monitor progress, and help students overcome emotional challenges. A DBS, SEMH experience, and Level 2/3 TA qualification are highly desirable.

Qualifications

  • Enhanced DBS registered on the Update Service.
  • Experience with SEMH, challenging behaviour or complex needs.
  • Clear communication, patience and effective boundary setting.
  • Level 2/3 TA qualification or relevant training (e.g., Team Teach, MAPA) desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Provide tailored 1:1 and small group support to students with SEMH needs.
  • Use de-escalation strategies and trauma-informed approaches to maintain a safe learning environment.
  • Act as a positive role model and build trusting relationships with pupils.
  • Collaborate with teachers to adapt lessons to EHCP goals.

SEN Teaching Assistant (SEMH Focus) - Plymouth

What you will be doing

In this role, you will play a pivotal part in the educational and personal journey of pupils in Key Stage 3 and 4 who face barriers to learning. You will help transform lives by:

  • Providing tailored 1:1 and small group support to students with SEMH needs.
  • Utilising de-escalation strategies and trauma-informed approaches to create a safe, structured, and calm learning environment.
  • Acting as a positive role model, building trusting relationships that empower students to navigate emotional challenges.
  • Collaborating with classroom teachers to adapt lessons that align with individual EHCP goals.
  • Monitoring progress and well-being, sharing key insights with the SENCO to ensure every student is supported effectively.
Who you are

You are a calm, professional, and emotionally literate individual who thrives in a school setting. You possess a strong desire to see every student reach their full potential, regardless of the challenges they face.

  • You hold an Enhanced DBS registered on the Update Service.
  • You have proven experience working with young people with SEMH, challenging behaviour, or complex needs.
  • You communicate with clarity, patience, and effective boundary-setting skills.
  • You have a Level 2/3 Teaching Assistant qualification or relevant degree/training (e.g., Team Teach, MAPA) is highly desirable.
  • You are based in or easily accessible to Plymouth and available for a full-time, long-term commitment.
