Job summary

Tradewind Recruitment is seeking a dedicated Primary SEN Teacher for a specialist school in Mitcham, South London. You will join a small KS1 class of 3-5 pupils with autism, planning and delivering differentiated lessons tailored to each child’s communication needs.

Ideal candidates will have QTS and experience with autism, PECS, or Makaton, working within a supportive team to foster a calm, structured learning environment where every child can progress.

Qualifications

• Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
• Experience working with pupils with SEN, particularly autism
• Confident supporting non-verbal pupils
• Familiar with PECS, Makaton or other AAC approaches
• Patient, calm and highly nurturing
• Creative in adapting lessons and activities
• Confident managing complex needs
• Strong team player who collaborates effectively
• Passionate about helping pupils achieve their individual potential

Responsibilities

• Plan and deliver engaging KS1 lessons adapted to individual SEN needs.
• Support pupils with autism and complex communication needs.
• Use and develop communication strategies including PECS and Makaton.
• Create structured routines and a positive learning environment.
• Differentiate learning according to individual EHCP outcomes.
• Work closely with TAs, therapists and other professionals.
• Monitor and assess pupil progress.
• Build strong, trusting relationships with pupils.
• Support pupils' social, emotional and communication development.
