Job summary

GSL Education in Sheffield is seeking an SEMH Teaching Assistant to support students with social, emotional and mental health needs. You will provide one-to-one and small-group support, helping with emotional regulation and engagement in lessons.

The role is long-term in a welcoming secondary school, starting immediately. Applicants should have experience with children, resilience, strong communication, and a calm, patient approach; DBS checks and references required.

Qualifications

  • Previous experience working with children or young people.
  • Experience supporting SEMH, behaviour or additional needs.
  • A calm, patient and consistent approach.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to build trusting professional relationships with young people.
  • Resilience and confidence when responding to challenging situations.
  • A genuine commitment to supporting students' wellbeing and education.

Responsibilities

  • Provide one-to-one and small-group support for students with SEMH needs.
  • Help students manage emotions, behaviour and engagement with learning.
  • Work alongside teachers and pastoral staff to support individual students.
  • Build positive and professional relationships with young people.
  • Encourage students to participate in lessons and school activities.
  • Support students during transitions and less structured parts of the school day.
  • Share relevant observations and feedback with teaching and pastoral staff.
