Job summary

HS2 Ltd. is recruiting a Section Engineer to join the Midlands construction team in Coventry, delivering critical rail infrastructure for the HS2 project. You will allocate tasks to Site Engineers, supervise execution, and ensure quality checks align with the programme.

The role requires a degree in Civil Engineering (or HND) and at least 3 years of relevant experience, with strong drawing interpretation and permit-to-work familiarity. Flexibility for onsite work is expected.

Qualifications

• Degree in Civil Engineering or HND in Civil Engineering required.
• Minimum 3 years’ experience as a Section Engineer.
• Ability to read and understand drawings.
• Experience with Permit to Work systems.
• Basic environmental awareness.

Responsibilities

• Allocate tasks to Site Engineers and supervise their completion.
• Ensure Inspection and Test Plans and Quality Check Sheets are completed timely.
• Oversee requirements of subcontractors to meet programme.
• Manage document distribution and version control.
• Develop and approve site procedures for areas of work.
• Assess plant and resources with the Section Foreman.
• Approve method statements and risk assessments and ensure compliance.
• Ensure setting out is done by Site Engineers per design.
• Ensure design drawings reflect completed works.
• Coordinate with Section Engineers/Foremen to avoid clashes on site.
• Regularly review procedures for efficiency.

Job description

HS2, Britain’s new high‑speed railway is at peak construction. Balfour Beatty VINCI is HS2’s construction partner in the Midlands, responsible for delivering 90 km of the route, from Long Itchington in Warwickshire to the centre of Birmingham and on to Handsacre in Staffordshire.

Location

Based in Coventry – the South Region comprises Sublots 2B, 2A and 1A Long Itchington Wood. It stretches for approximately 39.2 km from Finham Brook to Southam through a mixture of rural and suburban landscapes.

Key Responsibilities

• Allocate tasks to Site Engineers and supervise the task completion.
• Ensure the Inspection and Test Plans, and Quality Check Sheets are completed as soon as the checks can be completed.
• Oversee engineering requirements demanded in the delivery of a section of work or on larger projects, of a subcontractor, to meet the construction programme.
• Make effective use of document control to manage distribution of information.
• Develop and approve relevant procedures specific to their area of works.
• In association with the Section Foreman, assess the plant and resource requirements to meet the demands of site and office‑based works.
• Approve method statements and risk assessments and ensure they are being followed throughout the works.
• Ensure Site Engineers complete setting out in accordance with design.
• Ensure Design Drawings are marked up to reflect works completed as the works are finished.
• Liaise with other Section Engineers/Foremen to ensure any clashes on site are managed to ensure a smooth flow of work.
• Regularly review procedures to ensure they are as efficient as possible.

Qualifications

• Degree level qualification in a Civil Engineering allied subject or HND in Civil Engineering.
• Minimum of 3 years’ experience as a Section Engineer.
• Read and understand drawings.
• Have experience of working with Permit System and actively raise permits to work.
• Have basic environmental awareness.
