Please note this position is currently based at our Wimbledon School: 24 Gladstone Road, Wimbledon, SW19 1QT

In order to meet the needs of the students we have in our secondary, we are expanding our functional curriculum provision for students for whom this would be more appropriate than following an academic curriculum. The students will be following the Equals curriculum, with a strong emphasis on students practising real-life skills in real contexts such as learning about money by buying something in a shop or learning about literacy by reading menus and road signs. Our overall goals for these students are to develop their literacy and numeracy skills alongside providing a broad and diverse curriculum, ensure they can use and apply these skills in everyday life, and prepare them for future employment and independent living.

Close transdisciplinary teamwork, is one of our core values, and we are very proud of our dynamic team of specialist teachers, speech and language therapists, occupational therapists, teaching assistants, art therapists and specialist behaviour assistants who work very closely together to ensure our students experience a meaningful, holistic timetable of activities to optimise their independence and emotional well-being.

What the role involves:

TThe role involves planning, teaching and delivering an adapted and pertinent functional curriculum, working alongside an experienced MDT. The provision will largely follow the guidelines of the Equals Curriculum, so experience teaching functional / adapted curriculums would be beneficial. The new teacher will be creating schemes of work that equip these children with the education, functional needs and life skills that are essential to them to succeed in an ever-changing landscape.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Supporting our students can sometimes be challenging, mental and physical resilience are qualities necessary for all our staff. Confidence, enthusiasm and a passion for learning.
  • A relevant teaching qualification.
  • Experience or enthusiasm for delivering functional / adapted curriculums and implementing learning in real life contexts .
  • Experience with the Equals curriculum is favourable, but not essential.
  • Experience and/or interest in working with students with moderate learning difficulties, language disorder, ASD and ADHD Excellent English skills (clear written and spoken English) along with good reading, writing and numeracy skills.
  • Experience of using symbolised communication systems (AAC) to support language and learning in the classroom is favourable, but not essential.
