GE Renewable Energy is seeking a Secondary Design Manager to work within our Grid Solutions business from our Stafford office.

Job Description

The Role

The Secondary Design Manager will lead a geographically diverse team of designers, subcontractors, engineers, and project teams working on protection and control schematics and substation equipment.

This role will provide a high-level overview of design activities and interface with various teams throughout the project cycle.

Job Responsibilities:

The Secondary Design Manager acts as the technical guarantor for the proper performance of design works within their scope, ensuring adherence to design budgets, deadlines, and quality standards, aligned with customer expectations, while promoting ease of installation, operation, and maintenance of systems.

Responsibilities include planning design activities, managing execution progress, coordinating documentation delivery for procurement, manufacturing, and site erection, all based on customer specifications and internal standards.

• Define scope of work and schedule
• Establish documentation requirements based on tender, contract analysis, and project strategy
• Evaluate engineering workload and deliverables with PEM or PM and commit to budgets and timelines
• Ensure timely delivery of design and partner documents with quality
• Anticipate, mitigate delivery issues, and recommend changes
• Lead and coordinate the design team
• Monitor detailed execution progress and short-term planning
• Coordinate technical meetings with partners or suppliers as needed
• Manage design man-hours and resources
• Implement project strategy and highlight scope or design changes
• Communicate design issues and propose solutions
• Analyze customer technical requirements and ensure compliance
• Represent customer interests in design decisions upon request
• Coordinate with partners on technical comments
• Seek cost optimization during all design phases
• Ensure technical consistency and check subcontractor deliverables

Desired Skills and Experience

• Relevant degree in electrical or mechanical engineering, depending on activity scope
• Several years of engineering experience in project & EPC environments within T&D, Power Generation, or Oil & Gas industries, or 2-4 medium-sized projects as Lead Engineer
• Experience in project technical management with multidisciplinary teams and multiple interfaces
• Experience managing external subcontracted design work packages
• Knowledge of Transmission or Distribution industries
