Job summary

Marchant Recruitment is seeking a reliable School Caretaker for a school in Chelmsford, Essex. The role covers routine site maintenance, minor repairs, security, and ensuring premises are safe, tidy and ready for lessons and events.

You will be hands-on, well-organised and able to report issues promptly, supporting daily operations and safeguarding across school buildings and external areas.

Qualifications

• Previous experience in caretaking, maintenance or facilities support.
• Practical skills with minor repairs and general maintenance.
• Awareness of site security and health and safety requirements.
• Ability to report maintenance issues promptly and accurately.
• Strong organisational skills and reliable timekeeping.
• Proactive and responsible approach to daily tasks.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Good communication and interpersonal skills.
• Flexible approach to daily priorities and duties.
• Willingness to complete safeguarding and background checks.

Responsibilities

• Opening and securing the school site as required.
• Inspecting buildings, grounds and access points.
• Completing general maintenance and minor repairs.
• Maintaining external areas, pathways and playgrounds.
• Checking doors, windows, locks and fixtures.
• Reporting faults, hazards and damage promptly.
• Supporting basic health and safety checks.
• Ensuring entrances and communal areas remain tidy and accessible.
• Assisting with preparation of rooms for activities and events.
• Supporting deliveries and movement of equipment.
• Maintaining secure and organised storage areas.
• Monitoring maintenance tools and materials.
• Liaising with contractors and supporting site access.
• Responding to requests from school staff.
• Following site security procedures and safeguarding requirements.
