Job summary

Marchant Recruitment is seeking a reliable School Caretaker and Maintenance Operative to help maintain the school's buildings, facilities and grounds in Basildon, Essex. The role suits someone with caretaking or maintenance experience who takes pride in a safe, well-presented environment.

You will carry out routine inspections, minor repairs and support site security, preparing rooms for activities and assisting contractors, while following health and safety procedures.

Qualifications

• Experience in caretaking, maintenance or facilities support.
• Experience in a school environment is advantageous.
• Basic DIY, carpentry, decorating or plumbing skills would be beneficial.
• Understanding of health and safety procedures and safe working practices.
• The right to work in the UK.

Responsibilities

• Open and secure the school premises when required.
• Carry out routine inspections of buildings, classrooms and external areas.
• Complete minor repairs and general maintenance tasks.
• Identify and report faults, damage and potential safety hazards.
• Check doors, windows, locks and access points.
• Maintain tidy and safe corridors, entrances and communal areas.
• Assist with preparing rooms for meetings, assemblies and school events.
• Move furniture, equipment and supplies safely.
• Monitor the condition of school grounds, pathways and outdoor spaces.
• Support general decorating, basic DIY and repair work where appropriate.
• Assist with receiving deliveries and moving materials.
• Support authorised contractors attending the premises.
• Ensure tools and maintenance equipment are stored safely.
• Follow health and safety policies, procedures and risk assessments.
• Report urgent maintenance concerns to the appropriate staff member.
• Help ensure the school remains safe, secure and presentable throughout the day.
