SMART Education Recruitment is helping a welcoming primary school in Great Barr recruit a practical School Caretaker for a 25-hour-per-week contract. The successful candidate will maintain safety and cleanliness, open/secure premises, monitor alarms, carry out routine checks, and report issues.

DBS check required or willingness to obtain. The role suits someone with hands-on maintenance experience, a good eye for detail, and a proactive, reliable approach with a focus on a safe school

The Role

As the School Caretaker, you will play a vital role in ensuring the school buildings and grounds remain safe, secure, clean, and well-cared for. You'll take daily responsibility for the upkeep and security of the site, responding proactively to maintenance needs and taking pride in your work.

Your key responsibilities will include:

• Daily site maintenance and upkeep
• Opening and securing the premises as required
• Operating alarms and supporting site security
• Conducting routine checks and inspections
• Identifying and reporting larger maintenance issues as needed
• Completing minor repairs and general DIY tasks
• Supporting health and safety procedures
• Carrying out fire and safety checks
• Monitoring the condition of buildings, equipment, and grounds
• Liaising with contractors and external service providers
• Helping maintain a high standard of cleanliness
• Supporting room and area preparation as required
• Responding promptly to urgent maintenance or site issues
• Ensuring the school remains safe and welcoming for everyone

Skills and Experience

• Previous experience in caretaking, maintenance, facilities, or a similar hands-on role
• Practical maintenance and DIY skills: confidence carrying out minor repairs
• Understanding of workplace health and safety
• School caretaking or site experience (advantageous but not essential)
• Ability to identify/report issues, good organisational skills, and a reliable, proactive approach
• Good communication skills with staff, contractors, and visitors
• Willingness and flexibility to support the demands of a busy school
• Enhanced Child DBS on the Update Service, or willingness to have one processed
• Ability to provide suitable references covering your most recent 24 months

Additional qualifications in areas such as COSHH, Manual Handling, Asbestos Awareness, IOSH, or Fire Safety would be beneficial but are not essential. Full training can be provided where needed.

• Location: Great Barr, Birmingham
• Pay: £15.00 - £18.00 per hour
