Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Transportation seeks a dependable highway maintenance worker to operate a 5 yard dump truck and a steel-wheel roller for paving and repair work, and to flag traffic to protect workers and the public. This position involves manual labor, lifting up to 50 pounds, and may require extended hours, including 12-hour shifts in bad weather.

A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required, with Class A CDL to be obtained within six months of placement.

Responsibilities

• Operates a 5 yard standard dump truck for hauling materials such as asphalt, limestone, dirt, soil, cement, pipe, construction materials and debris.
• Operates a steel-wheel roller in the paving of driveways and patching of the roadway.
• Flags traffic during road repairs to control flow of traffic to protect workers, general public and equipment.
• Assists in the installation of driveways; using hand tools, hand tamp, place aggregates, remove mailboxes and reinstall and help place large sections of pipe.
• Performs duties using manual labor in maintenance tasks such as clearing rights-of-way, cleaning drainage ditches, repairing shoulders, patching potholes, base repairs, bridges, paving driveways, and laying sideline/cross line pipe.
• Operates front-end loader to load materials for maintenance operations (earth materials, clay, sand, aggregate).
• Assists in emergency and inclement weather operations; may include extended hours or 12-hour shifts.
• Operates dump truck with snow plow attachment during emergency and inclement weather operations.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.
