Job summary

South Carolina Department of Transportation is seeking a field position performing manual labor to install and repair drainage features, while safely directing traffic as a flagger in work zones. The role involves operating dump trucks and various tools, with potential extended hours during emergencies or bad weather.

Job Responsibilities

• Performs manual labor assisting with the installation and repair of drainage features such as catch basins, pipe, signs.
• Serves as a flagger to safely direct traffic through work zones.
• Assists with the placement of traffic control devices for work zones.
• Operates standard dump trucks, hauling materials to and from job sites.
• Operates small equipment, power and hand tools performing various maintenance tasks.
• Removes litter, debris and dead animals from roadway.
• Assists in emergency and inclement weather operations, may include extended hours and/or working 12-hour shifts.

Minimum And Additional Requirements

There are no minimum training or experience requirements for this classification. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

The physical demands for the essential functions involves bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and grasping. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside normal scheduled work week; especially during inclement weather.
