Job summary

St Peter & St James Hospice Distribution Centre in Hurstpierpoint is seeking a Retail Stock Supervisor to oversee donation intake, sorting and processing, ensuring a positive donor experience. You will lead volunteers, promote Gift Aid and work with shop teams to maximise income across the retail network.

You will manage stock flow, recruit and train volunteers, and uphold health and safety standards while delivering excellent customer service to supporters.

Qualifications

  • Experience in charity retail or volunteer supervision.
  • Strong customer service and communication skills.
  • Ability to motivate and engage volunteers.
  • Good organisational skills and attention to detail.
  • Understanding of Gift Aid is beneficial.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the acceptance, sorting and processing of donated goods to ensure a positive donor experience.
  • Maximise retail income by promoting Gift Aid registrations and prioritising Gift Aid stock.
  • Lead, support and motivate a team of volunteers.
  • Recruit, induct and train Distribution Centre volunteers.
  • Identify valuable donated items and optimise stock distribution for income.
  • Coordinate with shop teams and retail colleagues to maintain stock flow.
  • Respond to stock requests to meet store targets.
  • Minimise waste and maintain high housekeeping standards.
  • Ensure Health & Safety procedures are followed.

As our Retail Stock Supervisor, you'll play a vital role in supporting the day-to-day operation of our Distribution Centre, ensuring donated goods are processed efficiently and effectively to generate essential income for hospice care. Job Details
  • Location: St Peter & St James Hospice Distribution Centre, Hurstpierpoint, BN6 9ES
  • Salary: £25,513 – 25,927 per annum
  • Hours: 37.5 hours per week over 5 days
  • Contract: Permanent, full‑time
  • Closing Date: Sunday 13th September. We will shortlist and interview as applications are received, so early applications are encouraged.
What you’ll be doing
  • Oversee the acceptance, sorting and processing of donated goods, ensuring supporters receive an excellent experience.
  • Maximise retail income by promoting and administering Gift Aid registrations and prioritising the processing of Gift Aided stock.
  • Lead, support and motivate a team of volunteers, ensuring they are engaged, informed and working effectively.
  • Assist with the recruitment, induction and training of Distribution Centre volunteers.
  • Identify valuable, donated items and ensure stock is distributed to achieve the highest possible income.
  • Work closely with shop teams and retail colleagues to maintain an efficient flow of stock across the retail network.
  • Respond to stock requests and help ensure shops and online selling platforms have sufficient stock to meet targets.
  • Minimise waste, maximise recycling opportunities and maintain high standards of housekeeping.
  • Ensure Health & Safety procedures are followed and raise any concerns appropriately.
What we’re looking for:
  • Experience within a charity retail environment.
  • The ability to motivate, engage and support volunteers.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Experience working with or supervising volunteers.
  • Understanding of retail Gift Aid and its importance in generating income.
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities.
  • Awareness of manual handling practices and Health & Safety requirements.
  • Confidence using IT systems and databases.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team.
  • Experience of online selling platforms and knowledge of retail brands and trends would be advantageous.
