Job summary

Wellcome Trust is seeking a Research Manager for the Climate & Health field to drive funding activities, convene stakeholders, and deliver strategic outcomes. You will contribute to capacity building in climate-related health research, including engagement with researchers in low- and middle-income countries and international partners.

These challenges need the bold research our funding supports, but they won’t be solved by science alone. We are looking for a Research Manager, Field Building (Climate & Health) to join our team. The Research Manager will contribute to the delivery of the Climate & Health programme, ensuring strategic objectives are met. This role is part of the Climate & Health team, which will deliver an ambitious portfolio of research, translation and engagement activity. This role will help deliver the team's work to convene, fund and share learning in line with the Climate & Health strategy by implementing specific projects and activities, such as managing and assessing funding calls and commissions, convening groups, drafting reports, and liaising with internal and external groups and individuals as required. Where in Wellcome will I be working?

The Climate & Health Capacity & Field Development team is helping to strengthen a diverse and interdisciplinary climate and health research community. We work with researchers, policy partners, funders and affected communities to generate evidence that can inform practical action and and contribute to improved health outcomes. A key focus of our work is supporting the development of climate and health research capacity in low- and middle-income countries, where the impacts are often greatest.

We welcome applications from people who have worked at the research-to-action interface, whether through research funding, research management, fellowship programmes, systems thinking, evaluation of complex interventions, think tanks, or similar fields. You'll bring a broad understanding of research methods, an appreciation of how climate and health interact across systems and sectors, and experience working across disciplines and perspectives to achieve shared objectives. This role includes occasional UK and international travel.

What will I be doing?

• Contribute to the delivery of Climate & Health funding activities, including convening stakeholders, informing funding decisions, producing reports and reviews, and providing specialist expertise where relevant.
• Build and maintain a strong understanding of the Climate & Health portfolio, monitoring research progress, research culture, diversity and inclusion, and sharing insights that inform work across Research Programmes and Wellcome.
• Develop and maintain effective relationships with applicants and funded researchers, serving as a key point of contact throughout the funding lifecycle and ensuring clear, consistent engagement.
• Contribute to the planning, delivery and close-out of Climate & Health projects, major initiatives and awards, coordinating activities and working with partners and stakeholders to resolve day-to-day project matters.
• Contribute to the selection and engagement of external advisors, helping to ensure decisions are informed by high-quality expertise and evidence.
• Build effective relationships across the research community, funding landscape and partner organisations, communicating the aims, impact and funding opportunities of the Climate & Health programme.

We’d love to hear from people with specialist expertise in an area of Climate & Health science, broadly defined. This could include areas such as climate science, environmental health, economics, behavioural science or implementation science, but we welcome applications from those with a wide range of relevant backgrounds and experiences. You’ll bring experience of conducting or evaluating research, working across disciplines, and bringing together researchers and other stakeholders to collaborate on shared challenges. Experience working in an international context, particularly in low- and middle-income countries or regions such as Asia, would be beneficial. A PhD is not essential, and we encourage applications from candidates with different career paths and experiences.

Minimum Criteria:

• Able to demonstrate a breadth of research expertise and experience in a field or area relevant to Capacity and Field Development in Climate & Health through relevant work experience in an academic, industry, funding agency or charity setting.
• Experience/knowledge of universities, funders and other relevant scientific and research organisations and communities.
• Ability to employ diverse approaches to effectively communicate complex information to individuals and groups from a range of different background and different seniority levels.
• Well-developed writing skills with ability to synthesise information conveying key points clearly and concisely.
• Experience/knowledge of managing projects in an academic, charity or industry setting.

Our Hybrid Way of Working

We have a hybrid way of working which is 3 days in our Euston Road offices (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday) with the remaining 2 days working either remotely or in the office.
