Job summary

GitLab is hiring a Staff Backend Engineer (AI) for the Verify stage to shape and scale the core CI backend. You will implement AI-powered features, define success metrics, and collaborate with Product, UX, and Infra to deliver reliable, scalable CI for millions of jobs.

You will write secure Ruby on Rails code, optimize PostgreSQL, and build instrumentation and observability. This remote, global team offers equity, flexible PTO, and growth opportunities.

Qualifications

• Advanced proficiency with Ruby on Rails in a large codebase.
• Strong PostgreSQL data modeling and performance tuning.
• Hands-on experience with high-traffic production systems.
• Experience designing and shipping AI-powered backend features.
• Data-driven approach with clear hypotheses and metrics.

Responsibilities

• Shape and scale GitLab CI backend infrastructure for performance and reliability.
• Design and implement AI-powered features for Agentic CI and Duo integration.
• Define success metrics and baselines for AI-in-CI initiatives.
• Build instrumentation and observability to ensure production safety and insight.
• Lead cross-functional work with Product, UX, and Infra across the Verify stage.
• Write secure, well-tested Ruby on Rails code and drive safe rollouts.
