Job summary

Balfour Beatty is seeking a motivated Temporary Works Designer to join our Regional Scotland team within UK Defence, Power & Regional Infrastructure. You will develop safe, cost-effective temporary works designs and support project delivery.

Work closely with project teams, temporary works coordinators and engineers, delivering designs, checks and risk assessments while championing Zero Harm and continuous improvement across projects.

Qualifications

• Thorough knowledge of engineering principles and temporary works design practices.
• Experience applying Eurocodes, British Standards, DMRB, CIRIA and CPA guidance.
• Understanding of construction methodologies, programme requirements and cost-effective design solutions.
• Previous experience in site-based engineering or construction activities.
• Strong analytical and numerical skills; proficient with CAD/design software.
• Excellent MS Office skills (Excel, Word, Teams, PowerPoint).
• Strong report writing and communication skills; ability to work under pressure and manage priorities.

Responsibilities

• Deliver temporary works designs to programmes, budgets and quality standards.
• Provide technical support to operational teams and bid activities.
• Develop and assess alternative temporary works solutions with site teams.
• Monitor and report design progress to stakeholders.
• Undertake site visits to gather information and develop design briefs.
• Identify and communicate design risks; prepare risk assessments as needed.
• Ensure design checks are completed and certified per project requirements.
• Support value engineering and deliver innovative, practical solutions.
• Assist with temporary works assurance activities and audits.
