Job summary

Balfour Beatty plc in Birmingham is seeking a Temporary Works Design Engineer to support the HS2 project across the West Midlands. You will design and check temporary works, liaise with site teams, and ensure compliance with safety and design standards.

You will work with experienced engineers, develop your skills in AutoCAD and other software, and contribute to safe, innovative temporary works solutions across multiple sites.

Qualifications

  • A degree or HNC or equivalent in civil or structural engineering.
  • Post graduate experience including either design (temporary and/or permanent works design) or site experience.
  • Strong understanding of engineering fundamentals and ability to perform hand calculations.
  • Experience with site-based activities and knowledge of temporary works equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Undertake temporary works design and checking for projects, independently or under supervision.
  • Ensure designs meet the brief and are delivered within timescales.
  • Prepare designers risk assessments and communicate residual risks.
  • Support compliance with the Temporary Works Management Procedure.

About the role

Join Balfour Beatty and play a pivotal role in delivering one of the UK's most ambitious infrastructure projects. We are seeking a talented Temporary Works Design Engineer to support the construction of five critical HS2 Headhouse structures across the West Midlands, providing essential infrastructure for the Long Itchington and Bromford tunnels. These complex facilities will house vital mechanical and electrical systems, instrumentation and control equipment, fire safety systems, water storage, and maintenance and emergency access routes that are fundamental to the safe operation of the HS2 network.


Based in Birmingham and working across the Long Itchington Wood North & South and Bromford East, Intermediate and West Portal sites, this is an exciting opportunity to develop your career on a nationally significant project. Reporting into our UKCS Regional Civils Temporary Works team, you'll work alongside experienced engineers while receiving dedicated training and development support. We're looking for an ambitious, technically capable engineer who thrives on solving complex engineering challenges, is passionate about delivering safe and innovative temporary works solutions and is eager to help strengthen our growing design capability as we shape the future of UK infrastructure.

What you'll be doing

Responsibilities include:

  • Responsible for undertaking temporary works design and checking for individual projects either independently or under the supervision of a senior engineer including:
    • Site establishment
    • Haul roads
    • Working platforms
    • Pre-cast unit installation and stability
    • Service protection slabs
    • Shoring solutions
    • Earthworks excavation and slope stability
    • Formwork/ falsework
    • Scaffolding and edge protection
    • Propping
  • Ensure internal and subcontractor designs comply with the temporary works design brief and are delivered within the required timescale.
  • Ensure design risks are considered and prepare Designers risk assessments, communicating residual design risks as appropriate.
  • Ensure compliance with the Balfour Beatty Temporary Works Management Procedure.
  • Actively supports the Balfour Beatty values of Integrity, Teamwork, Excellence and Respect
  • Ensure a relentless focus on Zero Harm
Who we're looking for

This role requires an individual with the following qualifications, knowledge, experience and personal qualities:

  • A degree or HNC or equivalent in civil or structural engineering. Able to demonstrate a clear understanding of engineering principles.
  • Post graduate experience including either design (temporary and/or permanent works design) or site experience.
  • Has strong fundamental understanding of engineering, and is able to complete hand calculations and verify through secondary means (i.e. design software).
  • Has some experience of site based activities and a knowledge of proprietary equipment commonly used in temporary works applications.
  • Has an appetite for self-learning, motivation for continual improvement and challenges current ways of working to develop more effective and efficient solutions.
  • An awareness of current design standards and codes of practice, and published guidance documents relevant to temporary works.
  • Conversant with the management and procedures associated with temporary works as defined in BS 5975: 2024.
  • Strong team player that enjoys working collaboratively within a high functioning team, can work independently and manage their own workload. Takes responsibility and has strong organisational skills.
  • Able to establish good working relationships with both work colleagues and external technical consultants and suppliers.
  • Able to clearly and confidently communicate engineering ideas and principles both verbally and in writing.
  • Has a genuine interest in engineering and seeks out further learning for both themselves and the team (i.e. CPD sessions).
  • Working experience of AutoCAD, and various others design software packages (i.e. Hilti profis, Tensar, Beam Pal/ RMD Beam, GFSafe, WALLAP, ROBOT and Geo 5 software packages) used for Temporary Works designs and checks.
  • Working towards full membership of an appropriate professional institution (ICE or IStructE).
