Our Regulatory team is looking to recruit a lawyer from a professional regulatory background to lead on our case work.

The successful lawyer may be based out of our London, Cardiff, Reading or Southampton office. It’s a great time to join the team as we grow following new client wins and significant increases in work.

Our lawyers act for a range of clients in regulatory case work, including investigations and preparation for hearings before regulatory tribunals. They also conduct litigation in regulatory appeals and applications before courts in England and Wales (including the High Court). They may also have the opportunity to develop a practice as a legal advisor to regulatory panels.

We are committed to flexible and agile working arrangements which we are happy to discuss with you. Team members currently attend the office on 2 days each week.

Our Regulatory team is recognised in both Chambers and Legal 500 as a highly regarded team specialising in advising professional regulators. Our clients include regulators and professionals in sectors such as health and social care, accountancy, and education.

We have one of the largest teams in the country, comprising solicitors, barristers, CILEX lawyers, paralegals, and trainees, supported by a dedicated professional support lawyer and an experienced administrative team. We are driven by a shared desire to carry out important work that protects the public in a person-centred way.

More information about our Regulatory practice can be found here.

Typical Workload

As a lawyer, you will:

  1. Assess the concerns which have been raised and prepare a case plan setting out what further evidence may need to be obtained as part of our investigation.
  2. Assess the risk identified by the concerns and advise whether an interim order restricting or prohibiting practice needs to be obtained.
  3. Oversee the investigation of the case by one of our investigators or conduct the investigation yourself. This includes interviewing witnesses and preparing statements.
  4. Prepare a report at the end of the investigation advising on the strength of the evidence, recommending what action might be taken, and, in appropriate cases, draft an allegation.
  5. Keep the client and the person under investigation regularly informed of progress and contribute to the collation of monthly management information on our performance against key performance indicators.
  6. Prepare cases for hearings, working collaboratively with our advocates.
  7. Conduct regulatory litigation, including appeals and applications to the High Court.
  8. Give wider regulatory advice, helping to shape regulatory policy and practice.

Experience of regulatory investigations is helpful, but you may have acquired the relevant skills in other areas of practice. Full support, induction, and ongoing training are offered as part of this role.

Skills / Experience Required

Suitable applicants must be able to evidence professional regulatory knowledge or experience, ideally gained within a healthcare fitness to practice setting.

  • Previous case management experience is essential
  • Solid relevant technical expertise and intellectual ability
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Collegiate and team-playing approach
  • Excellent client care skills
  • Exceptional self-motivation and ability to assume responsibility for your own matters
