Job summary

Gateshead Council is seeking an experienced Regulation & Compliance Service Manager to lead Environmental Health, Trading Standards, Licensing, Environmental Protection, Enforcement and Metrology.

You will provide strategic leadership and operational oversight across public protection services, shaping delivery, policy influence and continuous improvement, while balancing customer-focused service. Hybrid working and professional development are offered.

Qualifications

• A degree, diploma or equivalent professional qualification in Environmental Health, Trading Standards, Licensing, Regulatory Compliance or related public protection discipline.
• Membership of or eligibility for a relevant professional body (e.g., CIEH, CTSI or IoL) with evidence of ongoing development.
• Extensive knowledge of local authority regulatory and public protection services.
• Strong understanding of licensing, enforcement, environmental protection, trading standards and compliance legislation.
• Experience leading regulatory, compliance or public protection services in local government.

Responsibilities

• Provide professional, technical and operational leadership across regulatory and compliance services.
• Oversee licensing, enforcement and regulatory matters with delegated authority.
• Lead service transformation, planning and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Build partnerships with regulators, government bodies and neighbouring authorities.
• Manage budgets, procurement, and governance with robust risk management.
