Job summary

Reading Borough Council is seeking a qualified Lawyer – Regulatory and Prosecutions to join our Legal Services team. You will provide expert legal advice and representation across enforcement and regulatory matters, helping to protect residents, support local businesses and uphold statutory responsibilities.

Working with colleagues across services, you’ll ensure effective delivery of legal and enforcement functions, with a focus on knowledge-sharing and continuous improvement within a hybrid

Qualifications

• Qualified solicitor, barrister or CILEX Fellow with current practising certificate.
• Experience providing legal advice in local government, regulatory or prosecutions.
• Ability to manage caseload and advise on complex issues.
• Excellent written and verbal communication; independent and collaborative.

Responsibilities

• Provide clear legal advice on Regulatory and Prosecutions matters.
• Advise officers on complex, sensitive and potentially high-cost issues.
• Manage your caseload and meet deadlines.
• Advocacy in court or tribunals where appropriate to your qualifications.
• Support the Council’s policies through effective legal advice.
• Collaborate with colleagues to deliver a responsive legal service.
• Contribute to projects, training and improvements to systems and processes.
• Maintain accurate time recording and monitor costs.
• Uphold confidentiality, data protection and legal compliance.
