Job summary

Tarmac is seeking an experienced Mechanical Maintenance Plant Fitter to join our asphalt manufacturing operation in Newport. You will work on a wide range of heavy Plant including conveyors, motors, pumps, gearboxes and drive systems, performing planned and reactive maintenance to keep production running safely and efficiently.

You will also utilise welding and fabrication skills, support plant improvement projects, and contribute to reliability initiatives in a fast-paced environment.

Qualifications

• Recognised Mechanical Engineering apprenticeship or equivalent experience.
• Experience in heavy industrial environments (asphalt, aggregates, etc.).
• Welding and fabrication experience; capable of working with conveyors, motors, gearboxes, bearings and drive systems.

Responsibilities

• Carry out planned and reactive mechanical maintenance activities.
• Diagnose faults and carry out effective repairs to minimise downtime.
• Lead mechanical breakdown responses and support plant reliability improvements.
• Under take welding and fabrication work to a good standard.
• Support and deliver small-scale engineering improvement projects.
• Work closely with contractors and suppliers on site.
• Contribute to root cause analysis and preventative maintenance activities.
• Maintain accurate maintenance records using the CMMS.
• Ensure all work is completed safely and in line with company procedures.
• Promote high standards of Health, Safety and Environmental compliance.

We're looking for a hands-on

Mechanical Maintenance Plant Fitter

with experience in heavy industrial environments who thrives on keeping production-critical equipment running safely and efficiently. This role includes planned preventative maintenance as well as breakdown repairs so you'll utilise your welding and fabrication skills. We also offer the chance to support plant improvement projects and continuous improvement and reliability initiatives.

What We're Looking For

We'reseekinga motivated and proactive Mechanical Fitter who can work independently and take pride in delivering high-quality maintenance standards.Suitable candidates will have:

• Recognised Mechanical Engineering apprenticeship or equivalent experience
• Experience gained within heavy industrial, manufacturing, quarrying, asphalt, aggregates, recycling, steel, cement or similar environments
• Strong mechanical skills covering conveyors, motors, pumps, gearboxes, bearings and drive systems
• Excellent fault-finding and problem-solving capabilities
• Experience removing and fitting bearings
• Welding and fabrication experience
• Ability to respond effectively to plant breakdowns and unplanned maintenance
• Good IT skills and experience using maintenance management systems
• Strong commitment to Health, Safety and Environmental standards
• Flexibility to work overtime when required, including occasional weekends and night shifts
