Job summary

Arup is seeking an Associate, Safety Risk & System Assurance - Rail in the UK to lead rail safety assurance work, manage safety cases and engage with clients and independent assessors. You will drive risk-based decision making across the lifecycle, nurture capability within the team and shape safety strategy to align with programme objectives.

You will work with multidisciplinary teams on rail projects, including train control, infrastructure and rolling stock, applying first-principles analysis

Qualifications

• Chartered Engineer with membership of a relevant professional institution (IET, IMechE, SARS).
• Degree in engineering, mathematics, science or related discipline.
• Experience leading system safety and risk programmes in rail.
• Strong workshop facilitation and senior stakeholder engagement.

Responsibilities

• Lead the delivery of rail safety assurance and risk work on projects or major work packages.
• Own safety management activities across lifecycle stages (hazard analysis, safety case, assurance planning).
• Apply safety analysis techniques (HAZID, HAZOP, FMECA, FTA) and risk modelling.
• Lead engagement with Independent Safety Assessors/AsBo and manage assurance interfaces.
• Establish senior client relationships and shape delivery approaches to protect outcomes and commercial performance.
• Plan work and resources over a year horizon for the project/team area.
• Provide mentoring and capability development to build rail safety risk and system assurance skills.
