Job summary

Arup is seeking a Senior Consultant in Safety Risk and Reliability to lead safety assurance work across rail projects. You will take a technical leadership role on defined workstreams, coordinating hazard analyses and safety justifications while interfacing with clients and independent assessors.

The role emphasizes delivering safety cases, applying UK/European standards, and guiding teams through evolving technologies and strategic rail challenges.

Qualifications

• Chartered Engineer with membership of a relevant professional institution.
• Strong experience leading safety and risk assessment programmes (qualitative and quantitative).
• Experience in system safety engineering within the rail sector, applied to complex, multi-disciplinary systems.
• Proven ability applying safety analysis techniques (HAZID, HAZOP, FMECA, FTA).
• Experience across multiple rail value chain elements (infrastructure, signalling, rolling stock, communications or operations).
• Experience working with Independent Safety Assessors / AsBo, supporting assurance processes.

Responsibilities

• Lead delivery of defined safety assurance tasks, work packages or small projects within time, cost and quality constraints.
• Deliver system safety activities including hazard identification and risk assessment.
• Chair and facilitate safety workshops with clients, partners and technical specialists.
• Coordinate and implement technical safety activities, including safety cases and safety justifications.
• Support clients adopting new technologies and addressing strategic challenges (decarbonisation, digitalisation, climate resilience).
• Collaborate with ISA/AsBo to prepare safety evidence and respond to findings.
