Job summary

Northern is seeking a hands-on technician to join the TrainCare Centre production team in Manchester. This on-site role focuses on routine servicing, maintenance, and repairs to keep trains ready for journeys. You’ll be involved in fault finding, cleaning, and ensuring safety standards are met.

No traditional engineering background is required; attitude, willingness to learn, and teamwork are valued. The role offers practical on-the-job training and opportunities within a safety-critical railway

Qualifications

• Hands-on skills across mechanical, electrical, or similar fields.
• Ability to follow instructions and work safely at all times.
• Clear communication and teamwork are essential.

Responsibilities

• Carry out routine servicing, maintenance, and repairs on trains and equipment.
• Support basic fault finding on traction and rolling stock.
• Clean train exteriors and underframes to keep everything in top condition.
• Ensure tools and equipment are used safely, cared for, and returned correctly.
• Apply practical skills across mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and vehicle systems.
• Check components meet required standards and specifications.
• Manage workload to meet daily production targets.
• Follow all health and safety procedures.
