Job summary

Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team in Brackley, UK seeks a Senior Research & Development Design Engineer to evolve our R&D test capability across the full development lifecycle, from concept studies to validation and implementation.

You will work across disciplines, designing interfaces for test rigs, supporting project planning, mentoring engineers, and delivering robust, right-first-time design solutions that enhance performance and reliability.

Qualifications

• Mechanical Engineering Degree or similar qualification at 2:1 level or above.
• Experience in design engineering in a high-end technical environment (motorsport, aerospace, automotive).
• Capable of designing and developing engineering systems quickly, accurately and for ease of manufacture and assembly.
• Proficient use of a 3D CAD system for modelling parts and drawings to BS8888.
• Comfortable working to tight timelines and demanding schedules.
• Broad knowledge of mechanical, electromechanical systems, pneumatics, hydraulics and structural design.
• Able to manage parallel projects with prioritized planning and flexible adjustment.
• Strong first-principles mechanics understanding and problem-solving ability.
• Strong communication and cross-departmental collaboration.
• Flexible working hours and team-oriented attitude.

Responsibilities

• Responsible for the design of interfaces between race car components and all test rigs in the R&D Lab, Dyno, Brake Dyno and Heat rejection facility, to enable performance testing, reliability prove-out and production sign-off.
• Support the Lead Design Engineer in prioritisation, planning and coordination of R&D projects with resource allocation and timely delivery.
• Mentor and support younger design engineers, providing technical guidance and day-to-day supervision for project delivery.
• Manage all R&D related design faults and issues, including containment, root cause analysis and long-term solutions.
• Design proof-of-concept installations to demonstrate new technologies' viability.
• Apply engineering principles and analytical techniques to deliver robust, right-first-time designs.
• Support testing activities and commission/validate new test rigs and first-off components.
• Support trackside activities by developing pit stop and garage equipment for safety, reliability and efficiency.
