Job summary

Portsmouth City Council is recruiting for a Quay Assistant/Cleaner at Portsmouth International Port. The role involves berthing and slipping ships, cleaning duties, and general port operations, based at the port with a 43.16-hour week including weekends and Bank Holidays.

You will join a twelve-strong team across three gangs and report to the Berthing Master. A good grasp of seamanship, safety, and customer service is essential.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of seamanship and rope handling is beneficial.
• Trained in manual handling techniques.
• Experience with berthing/slipping vessels is beneficial.
• Awareness of Health & Safety at Work Act.
• Customer-focused with good communication skills.
• Ability to work shifts outdoors in all weathers and as part of a team.

Responsibilities

• Berthing and slipping of ships, handling equipment and lines.
• Maintenance of quayside and related equipment.
• Cleaning duties across the port, including occasional machinery use.
• Loading, unloading, stores distribution and baggage handling as directed.
• Assist the Berthing Master in routine tasks.
• Adhere to all Port and Council policies and quality standards.
• Undertake other reasonable tasks as directed by management.
• Provide reliable service to Portsmouth City Council and PIP.
