Job Title: Pump Mechanic Assistant
General:
Under general supervision, performs skilled work in the maintenance and repair of the city's sewage pumps and equipment. Reports to the Pump Maintenance Mechanic Supervisor.
Essential Job Functions:
- Monitors performance of pumps and motors associated with the city's sewage pump station; performs preventative maintenance such as lubricating and adjusting equipment as scheduled; maintains records of inspections and maintenance activities; and monitors performance of pumps and motors at the city's sewage pump station, including rebuilding water pumps, sewage pumps, and related equipment.
- Overhauls and repairs pumps, valves, fittings, motors, and other electrical and mechanical equipment as necessary; runs new and repairs old pipes for pumps; inspects, adjusts, and/or replaces units and parts as necessary; performs custodial duties in the pump station, including sweeping, painting; assists in building repairs, including roof repairs; and replaces vent fans, drain pipes, and basin boards.
- Operates pumps, motors, electrical and electronic controls, telemetry equipment, and hydraulic systems; advises supervisor of parts and equipment needed for maintenance and repairs; responds to after-hours calls to repair or address sewage stoppages, pump failures, customer complaints, and inquiries both in person and via telephone.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Maintenance: Comprehensive knowledge of methods, tools, and equipment used in repairing structures, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic systems, and process equipment. Skilled in diagnosing malfunctions and operating related vehicles or equipment.
- Safety: Thorough knowledge of occupational safety and health practices, including federal and state safety regulations.
- Interpersonal Relationships/Customer Service: Ability to develop and maintain cooperative and professional relationships with employees and the public.
- Computer Skills: Proficient in using a personal computer with word processing, spreadsheets, and related software for administrative tasks.
- Time Management: Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize daily work routines and schedules.
- Mechanical/Structural Repair: Skilled in using shop tools and equipment for repairs.
- Communication: Excellent ability to communicate complex ideas effectively, prepare reports and work orders, and handle issues tactfully and confidentially.
- Mathematics: Ability to perform basic arithmetic, algebraic, and statistical calculations.
Education, Experience, and Special Requirements:
High school diploma and 1 to 2 years of related mechanical or electrical repair experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Valid Driver's License required.
Physical Requirements:
Must be physically capable of operating various equipment and machinery, exerting force up to 100 pounds occasionally, 75 pounds frequently, and 50 pounds constantly. This role involves Heavy Work physical demands.

- Effective interpersonal communication skills, including speaking and signaling.
- Ability to read work orders, reports, and time sheets; prepare reports using prescribed formats with proper punctuation and grammar; speak confidently.
- Motor coordination for precise use of tools and equipment.
- Ability to differentiate colors and shades.
