The role is a 2-year fixed-term contract (with potential to extend). The role can be based in Melbourne (South Melbourne) or Sydney (Barangaroo).

Reporting to the respective Project Directors and Deputy Head of Legal – Construction, you will play a vital role in supporting those projects and the Lendlease Construction business more generally. This demanding yet rewarding position will require providing strategic and commercially sound legal advice, representing the projects and Construction business to our client, subcontractors, and consultants.

Your focus will be on Construct Only Managing Contracts and GMP (Guaranteed Maximum Price) delivery model. Collaborating with commercial teams in both Melbourne and Sydney, you will assist in the negotiation and management of subcontractor and consultant agreements and oversee head contract administration. Additionally, you will be instrumental in training and mentoring contract administrators and project teams.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Provide legal support and guidance on the projects’ head contracts including on their GMP processes.
  2. Draft, review, negotiate, and finalise subcontractor/consultant agreements, and variations.
  3. Assess and advise on subcontractor/consultant contract claims and disputes.
  4. Prepare and review deeds of amendments, deeds of settlement, and novation with our client and supply chain.
  5. Support the commercial teams with head contract administration, including notices of delay, extensions of time, and change orders.
  6. Interpret contract terms and identify legal/commercial risks.
  7. Assess entitlement for head contract claims and develop successful claim strategies.
  8. Advise on contract disputes and resolution strategies.
  9. Review work orders for compliance with agreed formats and templates.
  10. Conduct ad-hoc reviews of legal documents such as land access agreements.
  11. Deliver training and upskilling programs for contract administrators and project teams on contract terms, drafting techniques, and claim strategies.

Qualifications and Experience:

  1. A tertiary education in law and extensive post-qualification legal experience of between 5 years to 9 years PQE including exposure to a variety of major projects within the construction sector.
  2. Demonstrated experience in negotiating and managing complex construction contracts.
  3. Solid tier 1 or 2 private practice experience.
  4. Strong negotiation, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  5. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  6. Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
