Job summary

London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine is seeking a capable administrator to lead the financial management and administrative coordination for the department's research projects. You will handle funding costings, project setup, ongoing management and closure, and work closely with the PI and partner institutions.

The role requires a degree or equivalent with substantial experience in academia, including budget monitoring, costings, and reporting.

Qualifications

  • Higher education to degree level or equivalent or substantial relevant experience.
  • Experience providing proactive administrative support for academic research.
  • Ability to monitor large budgets and prepare accurate costings, projections and reports.
  • Ability to manage a busy workload with high accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Experience managing large complex grants would be advantageous.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, manage and coordinate administrative coordination and financial management for the department's research projects.
  • Act as first point of contact for projects and provide guidance on their management and administration across the full life cycle (funding costings, setup, management, closure).
  • Collaborate with the Principal Investigator and liaise with partner institutions as needed.

Job description

This role will work across the department of Public Health, Environments and Society (PHES). The successful applicant will be expected to lead, manage and be responsible for all aspects of the administrative coordination and financial management for the departments research projects. As a key member of the Department and the first point of contact for those projects, the post-holder will provide guidance on their management and administration, from funding costings for application, project set up, management and closure (the complete life cycle), working closely with the Principal Investigator (PI) and liaising with partner institutions where necessary.

Applicants must have higher education to degree level or equivalent or substantial relevant experience and substantial experience of providing proactive administrative support of academic research, including proven ability to monitor large budgets and prepare accurate costings, projections and reports; ability to use initiative and judgement to solve problems; to manage a busy workload; and work to a high level of accuracy and attention to detail. Experience of managing large complex grants would be an advantage. Further particulars are included in the job description.

The post is full-time 35 hours per week at 1.0 FTE and fixed term until 08 January 2028. The post is available from 09 November 2026.

The salary will be on the LSHTM salary scale, Grade 5 scale in the range £39,984 - £45,728 per annum pro rata (inclusive of London Weighting). The post will be subject to the LSHTM terms and conditions of service. Annual leave entitlement is 30 working days per year, pro rata for part time staff. In addition to this there are discretionary "Wellbeing Days". Membership of the Pension Scheme is available. The post is based in London at LSHTM.
