Job summary

WSP is seeking a Principal Structural Engineer to lead the design of underground structures, including tunnels and shafts, across the UK with global reach. You will deliver safe, innovative solutions while coordinating with multidisciplinary teams and ensuring project milestones are met.

You will apply Eurocodes/BS guidelines, perform structural analyses, mentor engineers, and contribute to business development. A passion for health, safety, inclusion, and professional growth is expected.

Qualifications

• Degree qualified in Civil or Structural Engineering (postgraduate qualification desirable).
• Extensive experience in structural design for underground shafts and tunnels.
• Strong understanding of structural behaviour under complex loading conditions and ground-structure interaction.

Responsibilities

• Lead structural design for underground structures from concept through design and construction phases.
• Apply advanced structural engineering principles for safe, efficient solutions.
• Ensure compliance with Eurocodes, BS codes, ITA guidelines, and local regulations.
• Conduct load assessments, ground-structure interaction modelling, and support system design.
• Collaborate with geotechnical teams to integrate ground behaviour into designs.
• Manage multi-disciplinary project delivery and coordinate inputs from teams.
• Provide guidance on construction methods, risk management, and material selection.
• Conduct site inspections and supervise tunnelling works; mentor junior engineers.
• Support business development through proposals and client engagement.
