Job summary

Genomics England is seeking a Principal Data Engineer to shape data engineering across the organisation. You’ll lead senior technical decisions, establish sustainable data platforms, and work across teams to deliver secure, scalable data solutions for clinical and research data.

You will influence architecture, drive DataOps and CI/CD practices, and mentor engineers while collaborating with governance and product teams to ensure compliant data handling and delivery.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree or equivalent experience in data or infrastructure.
• Proven ability to operate at Principal level and shape technical direction across multiple teams.
• Experience designing secure and resilient data platforms for highly governed data.

Responsibilities

• Provide senior technical leadership across data engineering capability
• Set standards for secure, scalable data platforms and pipelines
• Lead design and delivery of complex data solutions across cloud/hybrid environments
• Provide architectural guidance on lakehouse, distributed and event-driven systems
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to solve complex data challenges
• Promote interoperability, data modelling, provenance and governance
• Embed privacy, security, and regulatory requirements into data platforms
• Strengthen engineering practices via DataOps, DevOps, CI/CD and IaC
• Mentor engineers and share knowledge across the organisation
• Evaluate emerging technologies and guide sustainable tech choices
