Job summary

Genomics England is hiring a Principal Data Engineer to shape data engineering across the organisation. You will lead senior technical direction, establish robust platforms, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to enable secure handling of sensitive genomic and health data.

As a principal contributor, you will influence architectural decisions, mentor engineers, and drive sustainable data engineering practices while aligning with governance and privacy requirements.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree or equivalent in data or infrastructure.
• Extensive experience designing enterprise-scale data platforms.
• Experience in regulated healthcare/genomics environments is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Provide technical leadership across data engineering and roadmaps.
• Set standards for secure, scalable data platforms and data products.
• Lead design and delivery of data solutions across cloud and hybrid environments.
• Offer architectural guidance on Lakehouse and event-driven systems.
• Collaborate with engineering, bioinformatics, product and governance teams.
• Promote interoperability, metadata and provenance in data platforms.
• Embed privacy, security and regulatory requirements in data platforms.
• Enhance engineering practices with DataOps, DevOps and CI/CD.
• Mentor engineers and develop data engineering capability across the org.
