Primary Special Needs Teacher

Contract: Full-time, temporary to permanent

Start Date: ASAP

Location: Tonbridge

Pay: £130-£250 per day, dependent on qualifications and responsibilities.

About the School

At academics, we're looking for a special needs teacher! This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic teacher to support primary-aged children with a range of special educational needs. As a Primary Special Educational Needs Teacher, you will create a nurturing, structured, and inclusive learning environment where every child feels valued, understood, and supported to reach their full potential. You will work closely with teaching assistants, parents, carers, and external specialists to deliver personalised learning experiences.

Role Purpose

To deliver high-quality teaching and learning to a primary class of pupils with special educational needs, adapting lessons and teaching approaches to meet individual abilities, developmental stages, and learning requirements. The successful candidate will create a positive and supportive classroom environment where pupils feel safe, motivated, and encouraged to develop their confidence, independence, and life skills.

Key Responsibilities
  • Create a stimulating, structured, and inclusive classroom environment that encourages participation, curiosity, and independence.
  • Assess, monitor, and record pupils' progress, using observations and assessment information to inform future planning.
  • Provide personalised support to help pupils develop academically, socially, emotionally, and communicatively.
  • Use positive reinforcement and appropriate teaching strategies to encourage engagement, confidence, and progress.
Classroom Management and Inclusion
  • Establish clear routines and expectations to create a calm, safe, and purposeful learning environment.
  • Promote inclusion and ensure all pupils feel valued.
  • Work collaboratively with teaching assistants to provide effective individual and small-group support.
  • Implement appropriate strategies to support pupils' behaviour, emotional needs, and individual learning plans.
  • Build positive relationships with pupils, parents, carers, and other professionals involved in their education.
Person Specification
  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
  • Experience working with primary-aged children, ideally within a special educational needs setting.
  • Experience supporting children with a range of special needs.
  • Familiarity with individual education plans and personalised learning approaches.
  • Experience working collaboratively.
  • Hold a DBS or willing to apply
