Job summary

Royal Mail Group in Chard is seeking a Postie (Postal Delivery Driver) for a 9-month fixed term contract, working 37 hours across a 5-day rota and weekends. You will sort mail, deliver by van and on foot, and build relationships with customers in the local area.

You must hold a full UK manual driving licence, be willing to drive a Royal Mail van daily, and pass a driving assessment. The role is outdoors, physically active, and involves a rotating shift schedule.

Location: Chard Delivery Office, TA20 1QD

Job type: Fixed Term contract, 9 months

Salary: £13.68 per hour* (paid monthly) + paid overtime available.
Working hours: 37:00hours per week – working 5 days in 7 across Monday - Sunday – 07:45/21:00* Supporting two separate shifts between 07:45 - 16:00 & 13:00 - 21:00, Letter Deliveries & Parcel Deliveries.

You’ll work on a rotating shift schedule, including some weekends. Your rota will confirm your hours and delivery routes, which may vary based on demand.

You’ll be required to work one in five Sundays at Chard Delivery Office.

What to expect

This role is physically demanding and fast-paced:

• Walking long distances (up to 12 miles / 20,000+ steps)
• Driving a Royal Mail van daily
• Working in all weather conditions
• Delivering letters and high volumes of parcels
• Busy, time-pressured days, especially during peak periods

About you

We’ll provide full training, a uniform, and an iconic red van. You’ll need:

• A full manual UK driving licence (maximum 6 penalty points, registered to your current name and address)
• Willingness to drive a Royal Mail van daily and able to pass a driving assessment
• Physically fit and comfortable walking long distances, climbing stairs / hills, and lifting / carrying 10kg+ mailbags
• Reliable and self-motivated
• Strong organisation and resilience in a busy environment
• Customer-focused, with pride in delivering great service
• Comfortable working outdoors and independently
